Red Wings Fly High at College Level

The fall season is always full of excitement as students return to campus and embrace new roles both inside the classroom and on the athletic fields. This is doubly true for those recent Rivers alumni who have been fortunate enough to extend their athletic careers at the college level.

More than 20 Rivers graduates participated in intercollegiate athletics this fall and several of them have earned championships and postseason recognition.
 
Field Hockey
 
Carlie Tarbell ’11 picked up where she left off last season as a stalwart in goal for the University of New Hampshire. She ranked second in the America East in saves on her way to earning second team All-Conference honors.
 
Elizabeth Hitti ’12 wrapped up her junior season at the University of Pennsylvania by scoring eight goals and adding eight assists for 24 points, placing her third on the team.
 
Also playing collegiate field hockey: Maura Crowley ’14, St. Michael’s College.
 
Football
 
Taariq Allen ’11 has played in all 12 games for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, catching eight passes for a total of 73 yards and a touchdown. Nebraska finished 9-3 and will find out where their final game will be played in the coming weeks.
 
A.J. Walsh ’11 and Robert Costa ’11 plied their trade in the NESCAC for Williams College and Tufts University, respectively. Walsh was a starting tackle for the Ephs while Costa played tight end for the Jumbos, appearing in seven of their eight games.
 
Boys’ Soccer
 
Matt Dias Costa ’13 and Stevie Van Siclen ’14 played integral roles for the Bowdoin College men’s soccer team as the Polar Bears stormed to their first NESCAC Championship. Dias Costa scored two goals with an assist while Van Siclen posted a 5-4-1 record in goal with five shutouts.
 
Peter Quayle ’11 finished his career at Colby College by earning a spot on the conference’s All-Sportsmanship team. He posted four shutouts for the Mules and did not allow a goal over the final 340:18 of his career, including shutouts against fellow Rivers alumni at Bowdoin and Bates (Jonathan Lin ’11, Sal Sprofera ’14).
 
Also playing collegiate soccer: Nate Johnson ’14, MIT; Declan McCabe ’14, Georgetown.
 
Girls’ Soccer
 
Maclaine Lehan ’14 played every minute of every game in her first season at Brown University and earned second team All-Ivy League honors for her efforts.
 
Allison Brustowicz ’11 earned first team All-Liberty League recognition after establishing herself as the league’s top goalkeeper. Brustowicz led the league in saves (40) and shutouts (3) and finished third in goals-against average (0.70).
