This past week, 18 students from Rivers were honored with Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards. Selected from a competitive pool of thousands of applicants across Massachusetts, Rivers students won a total of 11 Honorable Mentions, four Silver Key awards, and three of the prestigious Gold Key awards.
Seniors Leah Brady and Dan DiIeso and junior Laura Faas were among the select few students who won Gold Key Awards. Seniors Sophie Baron, Michelle LeBlanc, and Andrea Schweitzer, as well as junior Anna Teng, received Silver Key Awards. All seven students’ art will be on display at the State Transportation Building in Boston from February 1 to March 20. The Gold Key-winning art will then be moved to New York City to be juried on the national level. The award ceremonies will take place on Sunday, February 14 in Boston.
“These awards are a testament to the depth of the arts program at Rivers, with students earning awards in all of the different disciplines we teach,” says Visual Arts Department Chair David Saul. “Clearly, the quality of art emerging from our studios is excellent and demonstrates the passion and energy of the Rivers arts faculty working with our student artists.”
“It is great to have seven of our student artists featured in the statewide exhibition,” continues Saul. “The fact that 18 of our student artists earned recognition for creative work spanning drawing, painting, photography, ceramics and sculpture, really reflects the opportunity and diversity available in the Rivers Visual Arts curriculum.”
The students vied for top honors in 12 different categories: animation, ceramics and glass, computer art, design, digital imagery, drawing, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video and film. The award ceremonies will be held on February 14, 2010 at John Hancock Hall at 180 Berkeley Street at 1:00 p.m. (Silver Key) and 3:00 p.m. (Gold Key).
