Student-Artists Honored by SISAL

Rivers student-artists were awarded 18 prizes in the annual Small Independent School Art League juried competition.
Rivers student-artists were awarded 18 prizes in the annual Small Independent School Art League juried competition. Six students won first prize, eight were awarded second prize, and four won third prize.

Students in both the Middle School and the Upper School were honored in a number of media, representing the broad spectrum of art classes offered at Rivers. The award-winning works were chosen out of several hundred entries to the competition.

First Place Winners
Jacqui Durand, a freshman, for her black and white photograph entitled “Reflection of Self.”
Sophia Janowitz, a junior, for her printmaking piece entitled “Morning Ritual.”
Ryan Littman-Quinn, a senior, for his graphic design piece entitled “Landing.”
James Lovejoy, an eighth-grader, for his black and white photograph entitled “Self-Portrait.”
Samantha Lovell, a senior, for her charcoal piece entitled “Studio Interior.”
Alix Strasnick, a junior, for her watercolor entitled “Terracotta Forms.”

Second Place Winners
Julia Bateman, a freshman, for her black and white photo entitled “Afternoon Reprieve.”
Aaron Edelman, a senior, for his ceramics piece entitled “Stalking Cheetah.”
Robert Merrell, an eighth-grader, was awarded a second place prize for his experimental photograph entitled “Downtown.”
Anne Morse, an eighth-grader, two second place prizes for her photography, “Flower buds” and “Iced Tea.”
Jen Payne, a freshman, for her pastel work entitled “Watering Can.”
A.J. Zane, a senior, for his graphic design piece entitled “On the Bus.”

Third Place Winners
John Matthews, an eighth-grader, for his experimental photograph entitled “Welcome.”
Kelsey Merriam, a junior, for her graphic design work entitled “Reach.”
Emma Payette, a senior, for her oil work entitled “Milacapati.”
Chris Whittier, a sophomore, for his sculpture entitled “Rungs.”

The annual competition, in which 15 schools participated, was hosted by The Carroll School. Work was judged in two age groups, lower school (grades 7-9) and upper school (grades 10-12). The award-winning pieces will be displayed in an exhibit at The Carroll School from April 18-24. The closing reception will be on April 24.
