NEPSAC Tournament Wrap-Up: A Strong Rivers Showing

The Red Wings wrapped up another strong fall season this past weekend. Rivers was the only NEPSAC school to place all eligible teams in the postseason: football, boys’ and girls’ soccer, volleyball, and field hockey.

Boys’ and girls’ cross country finished the season on November 11 at the NEPSTA New England Division III cross country championship, held at Highland Park in Attleboro. Girls’ varsity cross country finished tenth. Emme Salyer ’27 earned All-New England honors, finishing in 15th place overall. Boys’ varsity cross country finished third overall at the championships. Jason Minicozzi ’26 (9th), Alex Young ’25 (12th), and Justin Jang ’25 (16th) all earned All-New England honors for their performances. Minicozzi, Young, and Jang also ran in the NEPSAC All Star Meet this past Saturday and did another nice job. Minicozzi earned another medal by finishing ninth. Young was 15th and Jang 17th.

Rivers football went on the road Saturday and defeated Pingree to win their second straight NEPSAC bowl game. Rivers was led by Amir Lindsey ’24, who had a career day: fFour receiving touchdowns as well as three interceptions. Max Stevelman ’24 threw for five TDs—one to Griffin Schutte ’24 and four to Lindsey. Jalen Morris ’27 added a rushing score for the Red Wings. Congratulations to the players and coaches on their tremendous accomplishment.

Varsity volleyball defeated Greens Farms Academy 3-1 on Wednesday, November 15, to advance to the NEPSAC semifinals. The Red Wings were led by Grace O’Sullivan ’25, Kate Paquette ’24, and Madison Ngai ’25. The team went on to defeat Newton Country Day 3-0 in the semifinal, advancing to the NEPSAC championship game against King School. While the team came up short in the championship game, they had an outstanding season. They made program history by advancing to the NEPSAC title game for the first time ever and set the record for most wins (16) in a season.

Boys’ varsity soccer defeated Kingswood Oxford 8-2 to advance to the NEPSAC semifinals. Goals were scored by Ewen Robertson ’25, Keagan Harder ’24 (2), Adam Prince ’24 (2), Andrew Alexandrescu ’26, and Jackson Vignati ’25. The team squared off against Kimball Union Academy (the eventual champion) in the semis on Saturday and battled hard but came up short, falling 3-2. Goals were scored by Arthur Dos Santos ’24 and Adam Prince ’24.

Two Rivers teams made it to the quarterfinals but did not advance. Varsity field hockey played Governor’s Academy on Wednesday but came up short, 2-1, with a goal scored by Lindsay Morin ’25. Girls’ varsity soccer fell to Suffield 3-0 in the NEPSAC quarterfinals.

Overall, it was a season that gave Red Wings fans much to celebrate. And with winter sports starting up soon, we will be back to cheering on our teams on the ice, on the courts, and on the slopes.
