What things are you involved in at Rivers?I am a part of the Robotics Club, the Community Service Club, the Book Club, and I have participated in a few events for admissions. So far my favorite club is the Robotics Club. I really like this club because, from day one we got to do everything from building to coding to competing. I really enjoy the competition and the ingenuity it requires.
What is your favorite class?
My favorite class is Latin because Ms. Fav makes the classes really fun. For example, she teaches the vocabulary using fun games like Quizlet, Kahoot, and Quizlet Live. My parents are from Puerto Rico, so they taught me how to speak Spanish. I love to connect the derivatives from Latin to Spanish to English. Something I also like about Latin is that, as soon as I walk into the classroom, Ms. Fav greets me with a warm smile, which instantly makes me feel as if I am going to do something amazing in that classroom.
What is your favorite Rivers memory?
I’m in 6th grade so, I’ve only been here one year, which you would think wouldn't be enough time to make many significant memories, but you’d be surprised by how many amazing memories I’ve made. Oddly enough, my favorite memory was my first away basketball game at Rivers. It felt so cool getting on the bus with my teammates. It was like on TV when the Celtics get on the bus with all the hype, with their headphones on and in the weirdest outfits. That day I was on cloud nine, and I definitely won’t be forgetting that day anytime soon.
What three words do you associate with Rivers?
The three words I associate with Rivers are community, dedication, and opportunity. From day one I felt like I belonged. Rivers made it really easy for me to adjust and make new friends, although I think family is a better description because at Rivers you feel as if you are part of a big family.
I chose dedication to describe Rivers because everyone is always looking out for me, and they want to see me improve. At Rivers, our advisors, teachers, and administrators are all dedicated to seeing us succeed and be the best that we can be.
I chose opportunity to describe Rivers because of all the opportunities I have had: the opportunity to try a new sport--flag football; the opportunity to step outside my comfort zone by taking drama class and participating in the middle school play, Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”; the opportunity to be exposed to the real world by working with executives at Wayfair during a math project that required us to design a lounge for the 6th grade while staying within a $2,500 budget (we didn’t actually buy anything); and the opportunity to do community service by cooking and serving dinner for the elderly and those in need at Natick Open Door.
How has Rivers shaped you as a person?
I think of myself as a leader, but Rivers has taught me many leadership skills that I will use throughout my life. I have learned that all great leaders know when to take charge and when to sit back and let someone else lead. I have learned that listening to others is just as important. Rivers has also helped me to see how important it is to be kind and make a positive difference in the world. We are constantly discussing real world issues and how we could be of help to the world.
