2024 RIVERS HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT
It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 54th annual Rivers Holiday Basketball Tournament. This three-day tournament will feature outstanding basketball talent from Rivers and several other New England independent schools; it promises once again to be a very exciting and spirited event. It’s always a thrill for the student athletes to see the gym filled with classmates, alumni, parents, grandparents, and other fans. This is why the third Thursday in December is still truly a can’t-miss night at Rivers!
We have two great basketball games in store for Thursday evening. In addition, the Parents’ League and the Alumni Association will host an alumni/community reception in Hutton Hall, with stadium snacks, dessert, and drinks.
The pop-up store will return with the newest Rivers apparel and accessories. Be sure to stop by and pick up some new and updated Rivers gear and gifts for the holidays.

RIVERS HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT HISTORY
In the fall of 1970, Nick Marinaro arrived at Rivers from Indiana to take on coaching positions in football, basketball, and baseball. As soon as football season ended, Marinaro went to Athletic Director Andy Navoni and asked which preseason tournament Rivers would be competing in. Navoni replied that there was no such event for New England independent schools, but that Marinaro could organize one if he so desired. The Rivers Holiday Basketball Tournament was born.
Rivers, Nobles, BB&N, and Belmont Hill played two semifinal games on Friday and the final and consolation games on Saturday. The tournament grew to eight teams in 1974, and added the girls’ basketball tournament in 1992, and a holiday hockey tournament in 1982 at the West Suburban Arena. In 2003 Rivers celebrated the basketball tournament’s inaugural year in Benson Gymnasium.
The Rivers tournament is one of the focal points of the greater Boston independent school winter athletic season. It provides players, coaches and fans alike with a highly energized and competitive start to a lengthy season.
