Empathy: A Surprising Superpower for Divisive Times
We are delighted to announce that Dr. Jamil Zaki, an internationally recognized Stanford psychology professor known for his study of empathy, spoke to the entire student body on Wednesday, October 21, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Zaki's virtual visit was hosted by the Center for Community and Civic Engagement (CCCE) as part of its Hall Family Speaker Series. Zaki discussed new research on how humans share, think about, and care about one another’s emotions within the political context of the crises of 2020, examining how we resist tribalism and renew the civic community. By exploring the mechanics of empathy, Zaki’s 2019 book, The War for Kindness: Building Empathy in a Fractured World, focuses on helping people empathize better. You can learn more about the book and Zaki's work here.
Here is a link of Zaki's talk today, so that parents/guardians can view the presentation and continue the conversation at home. Also provided is a study guide with follow-up questions prepared by CCCE Director Dr. Amy Enright. Finally, we will host an online parent discussion group with Enright on November 12 at 7:00 p.m. to talk about Zaki and his work. Space will be limited for the discussion group and chosen on a first-come, first-served basis. If we have more interested parents than spaces for November 12th, a second session will be scheduled for November 17. Please sign up here for the discussion group. We hope that you and your family will enjoy hearing and talking about Zaki's important messages on kindness, empathy, and connection.
