Spring Athletics Recap 2024

The shortest of the three athletic seasons, the spring has flown by this year, with only a few weeks left to go. As the teams near the ISL and NEPSAC championships, let’s check in on how our Red Wings are doing.

Varsity baseball is off to one of the best starts in program history, sitting at 9-3 (6-2 in the ISL).
With big non-conference wins over Dexter Southfield and Worcester Academy, the boys are looking to make a deep run in the inaugural ISL playoff tournament. Led by standout pitching from Coley Schaefer ’24 and Carter Bentley ’25 (who is committed to playing at Northeastern), the Red Wings picked up another big win Wednesday, 11-1 over Thayer in their second home game of the season. Bentley had a strong day on the mound and at the plate, pitching six innings with no earned runs and only allowing one hit while striking out seven. On top of that, he added two hits, three runs, and an RBI at the plate. Jason Delehoy ’24 added a double and three RBIs, while Griffin Schutte ’24 and Tyler Karp ’24 each added two RBIs of their own.

Girls’ varsity lacrosse is off to a similarly strong start, with a record of 7-2-1 (7-2 in the ISL). Led by the standout captain trio of Avery Del Col ’24 (Colby), Murray Finard ’24 (University of Vermont), and Cece L’Esperance ’25 (Richmond), the girls are comfortably in the top eight teams of the league, and they are looking to make some noise in the ISL playoffs. The girls are 2-0 on the week, having secured a tight win over Tabor on Monday 7-6. Del Col and L’Esperance had two goals apiece, while Finard added four assists, adding to goals from Kyleigh Rabazzi ’26, Molly Hazard ’26, and Hannah Piche ’26. Chase Anderson ’25 has been a stalwart in net all season.

Boys’ varsity lacrosse is in the middle of a tightly contested ISL playoff race, hoping to secure one of the eight spots in the ISL Championship tournament. The team currently stands at 6-4 (4-4 in the ISL), despite playing almost exclusively on the road. Their biggest win of the season so far was their lone ISL home game to date, where they came back from an early deficit to defeat Nobles 8-7. Marcos Ramos ’25 had a standout performance in goal, with 21 saves to keep the Red Wings within striking distance, and goals from captains Josh Do ’24 and Greg Canning ’24, as well as Will Croom ’25, Jeremy Kiefer ’24, Will Irving ’25, and Keaton Gaynor ’27, helping propel the Red Wings to victory.

Assistant coaches tc Hanmer and Liz Creamer have stepped up to lead the varsity softball team this spring while head coach Christine Pynchon is out on parental leave. After a slow start to the season, the team is on a roll, winning their last four games, including two extra-inning thrillers. On a beautiful day this past Saturday on Nonesuch Field, the Red Wings took a win over Winchendon. Ellie Beigel ’26 pitched all eight innings, striking out eight batters, and Ayla Torres ’25 carried the load offensively, going 4-5 from the plate with a double, three RBIs, three stolen bases, and the walk-off hit.

After back-to-back NEPSAC titles, boys’ varsity tennis is hoping to match boys’ varsity basketball’s three-peat with one of their own this spring. Infused with a blend of young talent in Dudley Willis ’27 and Jared Price ’27, along with the strength of returning captains Jordy Schwartz ’25 and Ewen Robertson ’25, the boys have won three of their last four matches. The team hopes to keep that streak rolling as they head into the home stretch before NEPSACs. On Wednesday, they defeated Tabor 7-0, with Willis, Price, Robertson, Schwartz, Grant Ramirez ’26, and Nolan Carlstrom ’26 all earning hard-fought singles victories.

In her first year at the helm, head coach Kerri Morton has girls’ varsity tennis finding their groove at the right time. After dealing with injuries, illness, and everything in between, the girls are on a roll, winning their last three matches. On Wednesday, the girls made the trek down to Tabor and came away victorious, with Anna Schlenker ’26, Ella Gardner ’28, Leah Jin ’25, Mulan Zhang ’25, Kate Hayes ’26, and Barrie Abraham ’26 all winning their singles matches, while pairs Ella Garner and Nicole Lidforss ’25 and Mulan Zhang and Leah Jin came away victorious in doubles.

The coed varsity golf team is having a solid season as well, led by captains Ryan Macduff ’24 and Camille DeStefano ’24. Most recently, they defeated Brooks 5.5-1.5, with DeStefano, MacDuff, Chase Holzman ’25, Henry Johnson ’24, Jack Renaud ’24, and Stevie Rousell ’26 all winning their matches, while Thomas Lamb ’26 battled to a tie for the number 1 spot.

Track and field has had some standout performances as well, as within the past week both Lily Chung ’26 and Keagan Harder ’24 have set new school records for the high jump. The team looks to keep it rolling as they head into NEPSAC championships, where the boys’ 4x100m team led by captain Milan Joshi ’24 (Colby) has captured first place the past two years.
